Jim Candy: Farmer, Councillor, Campaigner

Jim got into politics in 1990s when he campaigned on behalf of farmers suffering from OP poisoning from sheep dipping, speaking in the House of Commons, with help from Liberal Democrat MPs, including Colin Breed and Paul Tyler. Most of Jim's farming career was on a rented Council farm in Downderry where with his wife Marian, he raised 4 sons, until he retired in 2018. Jim farmed organically after 1999, with the emphasis on habitat management, especially on the land at Hannafore, which was added to his tenancy, Jim served on the Parish Council for 20 years, and Caradon District Council then Cornwall Council until 2017. He has also served on the Executive of SE Cornwall Lib Dems, including spells as Chair. Since retiring Jim has learnt to swim, in the sea all year round, avoiding sewage dumping. Jim and his wife spend time looking  after their grandchildren and visiting their son in France.

Following the outstanding By-Election result from the 4th April, Jim now returns to the Lys Kernow as Councillor for Looe West, Pelynt, Lansallos and Lanteglos!

Whilst other parties practise the politics of polarisation and division, Liberal Democrats strive to build a fair, free and open society, balancing the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community.
